Senate President sends 7-man delegation to SA over xenophobic attacks

The Senate decided to send a delegation to SA on Tuesday, February 28, after a motion moved by Senator Rose Oko.

Senate President, Bukola Saraki has nominated seven Senators to visit South Africa over the recent xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in the country.

The Senate decided to send a delegation to SA on Tuesday, February 28, after a motion moved by Senator Rose Oko.

The delegation of seven senators will be led by Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and includes Senators Ahmed Lawan, Olusola Adeyeye, Shehu Sani, Shaaba Lafiagi, Magnus Abe and Stella Oduah.

The Senate had resolved on Tuesday “to send a strong parliamentary delegation to the South African parliament to register its displeasure at the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians.”

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Abike Dabiri-Erewa had earlier criticized the South African government over the attacks.

She especially condemned comments made by the South African Minister of Home Affairs, Malusi Gigaba.

Gigaba is reported to have said that the issue of the xenophobic attacks will be settled at a diplomatic level.

Dabiri-Erewa however responded by saying that xenophobia had become a social disease which some South Africans need to be cured of.

She also said that the Nigerian government would no longer sit and fold its arms while its citizens were being killed.
