VP thinks Nigerians are not angry enough about corruption

The Vice President wants Nigerians to be more outraged about corruption in the country.

The Vice President said the government's inability to secure a satisfying amount of convictions in its prosecution of corruption cases is due to the lack of enough support from relevant civil organisations.

He said that defence lawyers who are intentionally frustrating corruption cases need to be pressured to allow the law to run its due course.

The Vice President stressed that the only way to improve Nigeria's image is by rooting out corruption and improving governance.

Osinbajo made these remarks while addressing representatives of several civil society organisations at the Civil Society Situation Room in Abuja on Thursday, October 5, 2017.

He said, "I don't think that the people, especially the civil society have shown enough outrage that one expects in order to consistently beam searchlight on the perpetrators.

"People come and ask where are the convictions but I say where are the campaigns, we should be able to point out these persons so that they will not be able to spend these monies.

"If we are sufficiently outraged about the delays being orchestrated by defence lawyers intentionally to frustrate such corruption cases, everyone will hail the move by the Chief Justice of Nigeria."

The Vice President also revealed the government's plan to publicly declare the amount of looted funds that have been recovered by the government in its war on corruption.
