DSS insists acting EFCC Chairman has failed integrity test

Magu is currently being screened by the upper legislative chamber for possible confirmation as the substantive chairman of the EFCC.

EFCC boss, Ibrahim Magu

The letter was sent to the Senate by the Department of State Services (DSS) at 5.07pm on Tuesday, March 14, 2017, according to Senator Dino Melaye.

The new letter endorses and refers the Senate to a previous report sent by the DSS accusing Magu of corruption.

Melaye, who read the new letter, quoted paragraph 14 of the previous report as saying that ‘in light of the foregoing, Magu has failed the integrity test.’

In response, Magu said that two reports were submitted in one day about him and that questions the integrity of the DSS as well.

The DSS sent the initial report in December 2016 accusing Magu of corrupt practices in a bid to discourage the Senate from confirming him.

“The circumstances surrounding the return of Magu to the EFCC and the role played by Lamorde and their close relationship are clear indications of his culpability in the allegation of corruption tendencies of the Lamorde-led EFCC,” the report read in part.

“In this light, Magu has failed the integrity test and will eventually constitute a liability to the anti-corruption drive of the present administration,” it added.

The report led the Senate to reject Magu’s nomination by President Muhammadu Buhari.

However, a second report sent by the DSS, and referred to by Magu during his screening, urged the Senate to give Magu the benefit of the doubt.

Magu has served as acting Chairman of the EFCC since November 2015 when he was appointed by Buhari.
