Kidnappers of regent demand N20m ransom

Sources say the regent's family are pleading with the kidnappers to reduce the ransom money.

Princess Toyin Omosowon

Kidnappers of the regent of Akungba Akoko in Ondo State, Princess Toyin Omosowon, who was kidnapped barely 48 hours ago have demanded N20 million in exchange for her freedom.

Omosowon was abducted with three of her aides by six gunmen on Tuesday, June 2, along Akure/Akungba-Akoko Expressroad, while returning to the palace after attending an inaugural lecture delivered by the Vice Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University (AAU), Professor Igbekele Ajibefun.

According to a Vanguard source, family of the traditional ruler are negotiating reasonable ransom money with the kidnappers.

“That is their asking price, but we have informed them that the amount is on the high side.

“We are still talking and we hope they will see reason and ask for a reasonable amount. They did not even allow us to speak with the traditional ruler,” the source said.

However, youths in the community are accusing the AAU Vice Chancellor of involvement in their regent’s kidnap.

This necessitated the University authority to shut down the institution as the youths are rumoured to be planning an attack.
