Rapists to face 14-year jail term

In Kano State, the crime of rape will attract a jail term of 14 years.

The crime of rape will now attract a minimum jail term of 14 years in Kano State, according to the state's Solicitor General, Mukthar Daneji.

While speaking at the Justice for All Conference held in the state on Wednesday, October 7, Daneji noted that before now, rapists only got a maximum of two years in jail, a situation which had not served as a deterrent to the crime but with the increase in rape cases in the state, it was pertinent to increase the punishment.

The Solicitor General explained that many parents now come forward to report their children being raped, attributing it to the awareness campaign put forward by the state.

He noted that so far, the the state judiciary has disposed hundreds of cases and many people have been convicted after being found guilty.
