The remark was made on Tuesday, May 10, 2016, by Minister of State for Agriculture, Heineken Lokpobiri during a public hearing on the attacks.

“We have discovered that the herdsmen, attacking Nigerians across the country, are not Fulani but another gang of Boko Haram insurgents from other countries,” he said according to Punch.

“Those arrested cannot speak Fulani or any other Nigerian language. Fulani herdsmen are going about with their legitimate business, looking for something to take care of their family,” he added.

President Muhammadu Buhari, who is Fulani, has been severely criticized for his response to the attacks which many believe is inadequate.
