Scientists in Switzerland have been forced to suspend clinical trials of an Ebola vaccine after volunteers began experiencing side effects.

Some of the 59 participants complained of joint pains in their hands and feet leading researchers to stop the trial one week early.

According to a statement issued by the University of Geneva Hospital, the suspension of the trial was deemed necessary as “a precautionary measure”

Speaking of the volunteers, the hospital said:

"They are all fine and being monitored regularly by the medical team leading the study.”

The vaccine was developed by the Canadian government and is licensed to two U.S. companies, NewLink and Merck.

The trial is expected to resume in January 2015 after doctors ensure that the side effects are "benign and temporary".
