Senator explains why he couldn’t support gender equality bill during debate

Senate President, Bukola Saraki later explained that the bill was rejected by some senators because they disagreed with it along the lines of religion and tradition.

Senator Ben Murray-Bruce has explained why he couldn’t support the Gender and Equal Opportunity Bill when it came up for debate on March 15, 2016.

The bill was thrown out by the Senate after it failed to pass the second reading.

According to the Bayelsa State Senator, he was out of the country when the bill was presented.

“I support the Gender Equality #GEOBill. I was abroad with my Senate Cttee when it came up, but I've gotten assurances it will be represented,” Murray-Bruce wrote via Twitter today, March 17.

The Senators who opposed the bill include Adamu Aliero of Kebbi State and Emmanuel Bwacha of Taraba State.
