Despite the presidency's insistence on the president's good health while he was away, his extended medical vacation generated a lot of controversies and sparked protests that have demanded his resignation, and counter-protests that supported him.

On Monday, during his first national address to the country since his return, President Buhari also expressed his happiness at his eventual return.

He said, "I am very grateful to God and to all Nigerians for their prayers. I am pleased to be back on home soil among my brothers and sisters."
