N1bn fraud - Court grants ex-Governor N100m bail

The defendants' counsel, Mahmud Abubakar, however urged the court to "grant unconditional bail for the accused."

 

Former governor of Zamfara State, Senator Ahmed Sanni, who was brought to court by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over mismanagement of N1 billion meant for the repairs of Gusau dam, has been granted bail.

The Zamfara State High Court sitting in Gusau, granted N100 million bail to the former governor on Thursday, Jan. 21.

Reading the charges before the court, counsel to the plaintiff, A. I. Raheem, alleged that the first accused had committed offences contrary to and punishable under sections 25 (1) (a) and 26 (C) of the Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Act 2000.

The defendants' counsel, Mahmud Abubakar, however urged the court to "grant unconditional bail for the accused."

Ruling on the case, the presiding judge, Justice BelloMuhammad Shinkafi, granted the bail, but disagreed that the bail should be unconditional.

He gave the bail conditions as N100 million and two sureties out of which one must be a resident of Gusau and be in possession of a property worth N150 million.
