5 ways to build your child's confidence

We all want our kids to be happy, healthy and successful but how is that possible without having to build their self-confidence?

5 ways to build your child's confidence

Lori K. Evans, PhD, a clinical assistant professor in the department of child and adolescent psychiatry at the NYU CHILD STUDY CENTER said that a confident child will be less vulnerable to emotional problems, attempting suicide or harming himself.

"When you are confident, you know your strengths and weaknesses, and that you can learn from other people rather than feel threatened by them."

So here are ways to build your child's confidence:

1. Ensure you Kid(s) have rules:

Children need rules and structure to help them grow, Kids want you to provide a set of guidelines for structure in their lives, It also helps them know what to expect and helps them keep up with consistency, Being friends with your child doesn’t mean you shouldn’t establish firm guidelines, Firm guidelines are crucial for your children.

2. Practice what you preach as a parent: Kids simply soak up information from their immediate surroundings and they will turn to you as their main source of information on acceptable behavior.

Monkey see, monkey do is their main strategy. Be sure that you show your child how one should behave through actions; don’t just tell them what they should do and then do the very things you instructed them not to do.

3. Make them work:

Make them do little things like set the table, get the water, lay the bed and so on. This gives them a sense of responsibility and makes them feel they make a valuable contribution.

4. Empower them to make their own decision:

When your kids know what the reward and punishment are for any given situation, this means they will have to make certain decisions by themselves from time to time, This will help boost their confidence and they will also learn to take responsibility for their actions.

5. Talk to them in a certain Manner:

The way you talk to your children is the single greatest factor in shaping their personality and their self confidence, the foundation of self confidence is self esteem: how much they like themselves, when children are growing up, they have no self concept, They have no idea of who they are, so they take up their self concept from infancy by the way they are treated by their parent.

Constantly feed them positive reinforcement, Tell them how wonderful, good and smart they are. This help lay down foundation of self esteem and self worth that will lead to self confidence they will need when the grow up.
