Nigerian female stars fail to shine

Out of a total of 20 voting categories, Nigerian females were nominated in 13 categories, with one category, ‘Best Vocal Performance’ female, only open to females. But they only contrived to come out with just an award in that category.

The Headies 2014 have come and gone with unforgettable highs, lows and in-between. With Patorankingscooping three awards including the most coveted, ‘Next Rated’ category.

But one statistic that remains glaring is the underperformance of Nigerian female singers.

Only Niyola, shone with the gong in a ‘female’ only category.

Tiwa Savage is also another high profile entertainer who lost out this year. Her dominance of 2013 saw her release her ‘Once Upon A Time’ album, bearing hit singles such as ‘Eminado’ and ‘Wanted’. She lost out in the ‘Best R&B/Pop Album, ‘Best Vocal Performance’, ‘Artiste Of The Year’, and ‘Hip Hop World Revelation.

But all is not gloom for her. Her parent label, Mavin Records, were heavy winners on the night, with Dorobucci scooping up the award for ‘Best Pop Single, and her work with Patoranking on ‘Girlie O’ remix recognized as the ‘Best Dancehall/Reggae Single’.

An unlucky story for this year is that of Yemi Alade. The Effizzy Music first lady has had a stellar year with the success of her ‘Johnny’ single, and the acceptance of ‘Tangerine’ and ‘Kissing’ songs. Yemi Alade also crowned the year with the release of her ‘King Of Queens’ album, but failed to make the grade in 3 categories which she received nominations.

For Loopy Music's Ruby Gyang, this year was not in keeping with her previous years. Getting nominated in various categories for her Good Man' song was an achievement in itself, and will be seen as a stepping stone to breaking even next year. She has had a fairytale run so far, and will need to maintain her current momentum.

Check out the table below that throws up all the female nominations for this year.
