A Chinese woman who posed for photos on an Indonesian volcano known for its stunning "blue fire" phenomenon died after tripping on her clothes and falling off a cliff on April 20.

Huang Lihong, 31, and her husband Zhang Yong, 32, were on a guided tour to Ijen — a volcano tourist park in East Java province — when they climbed to the rim of the crater to watch the sunrise, Hongxing News reported.

Their guide said he warned the pair about the dangers in the crater.

Initially, the woman stayed a safe distance of two to three metres from the cliff edge as she posed for photos, the guide said. She then started to move back to be closer to the picturesque tree to get a nicer shot. When she was walking backwards, she accidentally stepped on her long clothes and fell off the cliff.

Its crater, known as Kawah Ijen, which means lonely crater, is a popular destination for tourists and miners who extract hardening yellow sulfur to sell for making cosmetics, matches and other uses.

The volcano regularly emits small amounts of harmful gases, but the site remains open to visitors.

There are approximately 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia. Millions of Indonesians live and work near volcanoes, mainly because of their fertile agricultural soil.

In February, a 53-year-old Polish tourist was found dead on a climbing route while hiking to Kawah Ijen.

In September 2015, a 68-year-old Swiss man who was climbing Ijen collapsed and died on the way to the crater after complaining of breathing difficulties.
