Islamic State claims responsibility for deadly Kabul attack

2016 witnessed a rise in terror attacks across the world. An estimated 20,080 people have been killed in terror-related attacks this year.

About 90% of these attacks were carried out by the Islamic State terrorist group.

These terrorists no longer rely only on bombs and guns to wreak havoc. The unpredictable nature of the attacks makes it difficult for authorities to preempt them.

Here are the top eleven terrorist attacks that occurred around the globe in 2016.

1. Nice Attacks

On Thursday, 14th of July, a truck driven at high speed crashed into a crowd watching the Bastille Day fireworks, in the French Riviera city of Nice, killing 84 people and injuring scores more.

The attack happened about eight months after the Paris Attacks when 130 people were killed, and 368 injured.

The attack was launched by the Islamic State.

2. Brussels Bombing

34 people were killed on the morning of Tuesday, 22nd March, 2016 in Brussels, Belgium by three suicide bombers.

Two of them detonated their bombs at the Brussels airport, while the last one blew up at the metro station. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attacks.

3. Orlando Shooting

On Sunday, June 12th, 2016, Omar Mateen, walked into a gay nightclub in Florida and started shooting. In an attack described as the worst mass shooting in US history, Omar killed 50 people and injured 53 others, before being killed by police.

4. Japan Knife Attack

19 people were killed and 26 injured in Japan, on Tuesday 26th of July, when a man walked into a facility for the disabled and proceeded to stab as many people as he could.

He had before the attack informed the government of his willingness to help get rid of the disabled but was later released after being held in custody.

5. Munich Shopping Mall Shooting

On Friday, 22nd of July, an 18-year-old gunman opened fire inside a shopping mall in Munich, Germany, killing 9 people and wounding more than 15. He was heard screaming “I am German” during the attack and killed himself when he was done.

6. Istanbul Airport Bombing

Forty-one people were killed and 239 others were wounded in a suicide bomb attack at Istanbul's main international airport on Tuesday, 28th June, 2016.

The Istanbul Governor's office said it is the deadliest attack this year in Turkey.

7. Iraq Truck Bombing

On Thursday, 24th November a truck bomb exploded at a petrol station killing 70 people. The petrol station was packed with Shiite pilgrims who were returning from the Arbaeen commemoration.

8. Godogodo Attacks

40 people were killed when herdsmen stormed Godogodo, in Jema Local government area of Kaduna.

The attacks which took place on the 15th and 16th of October was the climax of a series of attacks that have taken place in a space of two months.

9. Kabul Bombings

About 61 people were killed and 207 wounded when suicide bombers attacked the scene of a demonstration in Kabul, Afghanistan.

The attack which happened on Saturday July 23 was claimed by the Islamic State after the Taliban denied any involvement.

10. Pakistan Police Academy Attack

About 48 people were killed and 100 injured when gunmen stormed a police training academy in Pakistan on Tuesday, October 25.

The majority of the people who died were part of the 200 cadets present at the academy.

11. Adamawa Bombings

On Friday, December 9, about 30 people were killed when two female suicide bombers blew themselves up in a busy market in the town of Madagali, Adamawa state.

The bombers disguised as customers, detonated their suicide belts at the section of the market which sells grains and second-hand clothing

The attack has been claimed by the Boko Haram terror group.
