The deceased, Fred Lokko Junior, 30, was in the company of his cousin, Fred Lokko Senior, when he was accidentally shot by Ebenezer Lamptey, when the three visited a family land at Kporkpo.
Ebenezer Lamptey, 48, who is said to be the Founder of Victory International Church at Osu, is currently in custody to assist the police in their investigations.
According to the Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Mr Christian Tetteh Yohonu, the land had been under series of litigation as a number of families had laid claim to it.
Number of clashes
He said there had been a number of clashes among the parties with some developers working on the land always arming themselves with guns in a bid to ward off encroachers.
He said about 12 noon on July 30, 2015, Lokko Junior in the company of his cousin, Fred Lokko Senior, and Lamptey visited the family land at Kporkpo to check on encroachers.
Mr Yohonu said while there, they met a man, whose name was given only as Yemoh, a developer, on a portion of the land sold to him by Lamptey’s family, wielding a pump action gun.
During interaction, Yemoh was alleged to have challenged Lamptey that he could never shoot in spite of always carrying a gun, but Lampty insisted that he knew how to fire a gun.
Gun shots
The Accra Regional Police Commander said in an attempt to prove to all present that he knew how to fire a gun, Lamptey collected the gun from Yemoh and fired two shots but one of the bullets accidentally hit Fred on the left side of his chest and he fell down screaming and started bleeding profusely.
Mr Yohonu said Fred was then rushed to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra for treatment but he was pronounced dead on arrival by doctors.
Lamptey in the company of others reported himself to the police and he was arrested and detained to assist in investigations.
Yemoh, the owner of the pump action gun, who fled the scene after the incident, however, reported himself to the Homicide Unit of the Criminals Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service with the gun and has since been placed in custody.
Meanwhile the body of the deceased has been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue awaiting autopsy while investigations continue.
