Indonesian President Joko Widodo on Tuesday reiterated his tough stance on drugs as police burned large quantities of crystal meth, marijuana and other narcotics.
“If you look at these things, we have to once again declared war on drugs,’’ Joko said.
He made the statement after he threw a bag of white powder into a furnace, marking the commencement of the destruction of over 1.1 tonnes of crystal methamphetamine, marijuana, nimetazepamin and esctasy pills in Jakarta.
National Narcotics Agency (BNN) chief Budi Waseso said that the drugs had been seized from 29 suspects in the past two months.
The president said 15,000 Indonesians died every year because of drug abuse.
“How many drug peddlers and traffickers die every year?,’’ he asked.
Report says Indonesia imposes tough penalties for drug offences.
Since Joko took office in 2014, Indonesia has executed 18 people for drug trafficking.
