King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia has been laid to rest in a common man’s grave after dying early on Friday, January 23.

Mourners paid their last respects to the monarch, who was one of the richest men in history, at a funeral service which held at the Imam Turki Bin Abdullah Grand Mosque in the capital, Riyadh at around 3:15 pm.

Abdullah’s half-brother, Salman, who is the new king, said prayers over the body alongside the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Pakistani Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif and other Gulf leaders.

The late king’s corpse was then carried in a simple white shroud and interred in a public cemetery where many of his commoner subjects rest.

The simple funeral was in keeping with the principles of the Saudi state school of Wahhabi Sunni Islam which sees flamboyant displays of grief or mourning as sinful and akin to idolatry.
