Mother arrested for murder of 8 children

The children, four girls, aged two, 11, 12 and 14 and four boys aged five, six, eight and nine, are believed to have been stabbed to death.

The mother of seven out of eight children who were found dead on Friday, December 20, in a Cairns, Australia home has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

The 37-year-old woman was found wounded at the home, along with the bodies of the children, by her oldest son.

“The 37-year-old mother of several of the children involved in this incident has been arrested for murder overnight and is currently under police guard at the Cairns Base Hospital,” detective inspector Bruno Asnicar said in confirmation of the arrest.

The police also confirmed that knives were found in the house but they did not specify how the children were killed.

"She's stable and being looked after," Asnicar said of the mother, adding that she was "awake... lucid and speaking".
