MTN office in Abuja allegedly shutdown following protests

More reactions continue to trail the xenophobic killings in South Africa while solutions to the issue are yet to be found.

MTN.

The Abuja office of South Africa-based telecommunication company, MTN, was reportedly shut down on Wednesday after it was targeted by a group protesting the ongoing xenophobic killing of Nigerians and other Africans in SouthAfrica.

According to a report in The Sun, "more than 100 youths converged on the MTN premises in Abuja carrying placards with inscriptions. Apparently worried that more attacks might follow, the MTN office, which services the entire Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and some northern states, immediately shut down its operations.”

MTN’s Head of Group Corporate Affairs, ChrisMaroleng, however has refuted certain aspects of the report.

Maroleng told News24 that “There was peaceful protest action outside its Abuja office on Tuesday – not Wednesday, as reported – and a memorandum was handed over. The only “disruption” was for about an hour when MTN staff could not access the building due to the protest outside.”

He also said that MTN’s business in that part of the country is “fully operational.”
