The new Uber wordmark

Uber riders in South Africa can now make use of the cash payment option which the company has implemented in some of its other markets already.

The cash payment option was introduced in May as a way to attract more riders to the Uber platform. Before that, only very few users where able to pay with cash.

At the time, Uber said, “Cash is a dominant payment method in Africa and this experiment will give Uber insight into how riders and driver-partners adopt and use a mix of cash and electronic payments.”

However, starting yesterday, Wednesday June 29, 2016, all Uber riders across South Africa will be able to make use of the cash option as well as use a credit or debit card for payment.

This will be the first time cash payments will be offered in all the cities in a country Uber operates in.

To find the cash payment option, riders simply have to open the Uber app and select "Set Pick Up Location". Tap on the card number and then select the option labeled "CASH". At the end of the ride simply pay the driver.
