Africa's biggest telecom company has appointed Vodacom's Rob Shuter as its new CEO

Innovation Village reports that Shuter is expected to resume in 2017 but not later than July 1, 2017, so that he can fulfill current contractual obligations.

Shuter is a South African national and is the current CEO of Vodafone Group's European operations. He reportedly has extensive experience in the telecoms and banking industries having held senior management roles at the Vodacom Group, Standard Bank, and Nedbank prior to joining the Vodacom Group.

"MTN is confident that Rob will bring experience and new insights to the CEO role having had many years in the telecoms sector both in Africa and Europe as well as in banking where his expertise will help as MTN continues to develop its new business strategy," said the company in a statement, according to an Innovation Village report.

According to the MTN statement, the appointments, along with many other that will follow, come after the successful resolution of the fine imposed on the company's Nigerian arm, which threw the company into financial turmoil.

Godfrey Motsa has also been appointed to oversee MTN's operations in the SEA region (excluding South Africa) with effect from July 1, 2016. Motsa was previously CEO of Vodacom DRC Congo and Vodacom Lesotho.
