Itsekiris say they've been denied means of livelihood

About 27 oil impacted Itsekiri communities have said that the activities of Warri Refinery have denied them of means of livelihood.

The spokesman of the group, Hon. Orugboh Emmanuel, said that Itsekiri community have been denied their means of livelihood as a result of the unwholesome environmental practices of Warri Refining and Petro-Chemical Company Limited and all efforts to get the previous governments to complete the clean-up of the area has failed.

Emmanuel, who praised the present government for the prompt response to their request which was barely made a week ago, added that the cleaning of the communities will help in the development of the area.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Engr. Babachir David Lawal, thanked the representatives of the 27 oil impacted Itsekiri communities for the visit.

The SGF informed the guests that the present administration pays serious attention to any community that has genuine complaint.

Babachir said there is an on-going project which the government has classify as one of its priorities and promised to do everything within the available resources to alleviate the suffering of the people.

"Such projects will still have to go through procurement procedures because Ecological funds would be deployed subject to Presidential directives," Babachir was quoted in a statement signed by Mohammed T. K. Nakorji,​ Assistant Director press in the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
