Ebonyi Gov. reportedly bans movement of herdsmen, cattle

The report also hinted that the state intends to enact laws that would restrict movement of cattle and other animals such as goat and chicken.

According to a report by Daily Independent Newspaper, Gov. Umahi made the announcement on Saturday, May 14,2016 saying the decision is as a result of the tension in the state over activities of the herdsmen in the country.

It was further reported that the ban was made known to top state executives during a meeting with security chiefs in the state at the state Police Command.

In the words of the Governor, “Every state must put in place what will guarantee peace for both indigenes and non indigenes. So that is a directive this afternoon and I want security agencies to take note because there is high tension now in Ebonyi state."

Also in attendance of the meeting were the leaders of Hausa community in the South East region, traditional rulers as well as other stakeholders.

However, Gov. Umahi pointed out that the veterans who had resided in the state for years and were rearing cattle should do that within a place because movement of cattle from place to place would stop immediately.

The  Governor stressed that it had been observed that the herdsmen who moved their cattle from place to place were those posing security threat and not the innocent Hausa/Fulani settlers.
