Nigeria to generate 4,000MW using nuclear energy

Nigeria to generate 4,000MW using nuclear energy

The Nigerian government seems to have woken up to the possibilities in nuclear energy.

Punch reports that the government has announced that it will be generating an initial 1,00MW, and 4,000MW using nuclear energy.

Speaking to newsmen, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said “The Ministers of Power, Solid Minerals, Health, Science and Technology who briefed the meeting said preparatory steps taken so far included the training of doctors and other medical specialists to prepare for unforeseen circumstances, the establishment of specialist medical centres and the procurement of necessary equipment aimed at protecting the health of the citizens.

“Nigeria, said the Ministers, is aspiring to start a programme in the coming years that will give this country 1,000MW of electricity in the first instance, to be increased to 4,000 megawatts thereafter.”

This might be as a result of the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola’s 13-point agenda, aimed at enhancing power supply in the country.

Nuclear energy also comes with its dangers. Do you think Nigeria can handle the responsibility that comes with managing a nuclear facility, bearing in mind the number of decaying public facilities across the nation?

Will another cabal not try to frustrate this laudable effort? Will this not be another means to siphon our well needed resources?
