Governor sets up 28 IDPs in readiness for predicted flooding

The governor said that government had acquired 10 modern fire fighting trucks to reduce the rising cases of inferno in the state.

Governor of Anambra state, Dr Willie Obiano.

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra has announced that the state government has established 28 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps in readiness for flooding.

Obiano announced this at a one-day Anambra State Fire and Safety Summit in Awka on Wednesday.

He urged the flood prone communities in the state to be prepared and ready as well as to comply with the government directives on movement to avoid mishaps.

“Pay attention on what the government is saying about flooding. Be alert, prepared and keep to the advice of the government to vacate your vicinity if you are in the prone communities,’’ he said.

Obiano said the state government would continue to prioritise issues of concern to the citizenry, urged the people of south-east to embrace insurance policies

He said that the Igbos hardly patronise insurance policies like the people from the South-west and south-south to safeguard their business.

“It was wrong for people to rely on government to bring them back to normalcy when insurance policies would have done so for them.

“You must insure your valuable items, it is not a waste of money,’’ he said.

Chief Paul Odenigbo, Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), said that scores of fire accidents and buildings collapse that have ravaged the state in the recent past raised a huge concern from the government.

Odenigbo said that the unending threat of flood in some parts of the state had made the SEMA to hold a summit.

He said the summit became imperative to sensitise the people on the inherent dangers of building collapse and solutions.
