Residents at Risking owning to Refuse Dump

In Niger, Tafa Local Government, the life of all the residents of the local residents are at risk due to a huge refuse dump.

The heap of dump is located behind the primary health centre and police station. If it is not removed soon it may very well be responsible for spreading of several diseases across the community. The locals are living in fear because of the imminent health hazard.

One of the locals, Waidi Olayiola told local newspapers that he is one of the victims of the refuse dump and it has not only affected the health of the people, there is a fire within the dump that is burning houses in the neighbourhood and his house was one of the victims of the fire.

The smoke that is coming out from the burning refuse is extremely dangerous to the health of the people and the government needs to act fast and quick otherwise the results will be disastrous. He even reported that the local Tafa Government is just sitting ideally and not doing anything to protect the life and property of the local community.

A youth leader of the community, Mallam Danlami Muhammad Tella, said that decomposed dogs and rotten animals have been found rotting inside the refuse creating a foul smell that have spread throughout the locality.

A Director of the Yong Doctor’s Academy, Mr. Abubakar Jibrin told the reporters that he have appealed to the Ministry of Environment and Health to intervene quickly and clear the heap of refuse. He also asked the Government to draft a proper waste disposal policy and employ community workers to address the issue of garbage in the country which can be used as fertilizer to improve Agriculture.
