They were released on Thursday, October 13, after negotiations between the Nigerian government and the sect which were brokered by the Swiss government.

They were picked up by a military helicopter in the Banki area of Borno state and received in Abuja by Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo.

Buhari had departed Nigeria for an official visit to Germany shortly after the girls’ release and as such couldn’t meet with them.

The government has said that it is also negotiating the release of 83 more girls.

Meanwhile, a Chibok community leader has said that more than 100 girls who were also abducted by the sect are unwilling to return home from captivity.

Boko Haram abducted more than 200 Chibok girls in April 2014 and most of them remain in captivity.
