36 dead, 20 injured in triple suicide attack

“Most of the victims were child vendors and beggars that usually crowd the checkpoint,” a hospital source said

36 people have been confirmed dead in Biu, Borno State after three suicide bombers blew themselves up at a military checkpoint in the community.

The explosions occurred in the Yamarkumi area of Biu at about 12:50 pm on Tuesday, February 17.

A source at the Biu General Hospital confirmed the attacks to AFP adding that that 36 people were killed while 20 others were injured in the blast.

“Most of the victims were child vendors and beggars that usually crowd the checkpoint,” the source said.

“There were three explosions in Yamarkumi here in Biu town. Many people have been affected; the casualty figure from what we are seeing now have surpassed that of the market suicide bombing that occurred on Thursday. Ambulances are rushing in and out for now. We will give you details later, “ a health worker told Punch.

An earlier suicide bombing had occurred in a crowded market in Biu on February 12 leaving 8 people dead and 40 others injured.
