Kwara Governor slams lecturers for going on strike

Ahmed said he was not happy that the lecturers have not been paid, citing the present economic situation in Nigeria as the reason for the delay in payment of salaries.

Kwara state Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed.

Reports say they are protesting the non-payment of their salaries for 10 months.

Speaking on the action of the lecturers, the state Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed said embarking on a strike action is not the solution to the challenge on ground.

The Governor said “If people understand what is going on in Nigeria, they will know that one solution to the problem is not strike. Strike is not any solution to the problem because if you are not paid, it is because there is no money; a strike will not change it.

“But if you are agitating for a benefit and the money is there but you are not being paid because of policy, then you can go on strike to change the policy and get more money. But when there is no money, strike will not change anything.”

Meanwhile, students of the college on Wednesday, June 1, 2016, also held a protest condemning the non-payment of the lecturers' salaries.

The President of the Student Union Government (SUG), Mr. Salaudeen Sodiq told newsmen that the strike has disrupted their exams.

Sodiq said the academic activities of about 1,500 students has been put on hold by the disagreement between the lecturers and the government.

Governor Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, during the Workers’ Day celebrations on May 1, 2016, promised to pay salaries promptly.
