INEC shuts down fake voter's registration centre in Niger

A suspect was arrested in possession of many temporary voters' cards.

This was disclosed by the state's Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Professor Sam Egwu, while he was speaking to reporters in Minna, the state capital, on Tuesday, March 13, 2018.

He reported that a tip-off to the police had led to a raid on the centre where a culprit, in possession of many temporary voters' cards, was arrested.

He said, "The suspect normally worked on the temporary voters’ card he obtained to produce new ones for unsuspecting client."

Prof. Egwu noted that the suspect, who is still being interrogated, charged clients money to issue the fake cards with workers of a certain construction company patronising his fraudulent business the most.

He stressed to eligible voters the importance of registering at designated INEC registration centres with no monetary charges. He also revealed that 10 new registration centres had been added to the state as a way of encouraging more eligible voters to register.

According to him, a total of 144,406 eligible voters have so far registered in the ongoing continuous voters' registration exercise across the state.
