FRSC says overspeeding is major cause of accidents on highways

Speed limit violation has been identified as the major cause of Road Traffic Crashes (RTC) on highways.

Over speeding kills 2

According to the FRSC Tollgate Unit Commander in Benin, Mr. Adewale Ameen, speed limit violation (overspeeding) is the number one reason for accidents, Today reports.

Speaking at a seminar/workshop, organised by the FRSC Tollgate Unit, themed: “Post-Crash Care and Fatality Reduction’’, he backed his claim by showing an increase in the accident rate for January, 2015, to June, 2015, and the same period for 2016.

Ameen said the agency had recorded a five percent increase in accidents, and 50 percent increase in fatalities.

He also urged motorists to steer clear of trucks/trailers, as these have been involved in most fatal accidents.

In an attempt to reduce these highway accidents, the FRSC has called on all motorists to always exercise patience.

Motorists should know that there is no second chance when accidents happen, so they should take necessary precautions to save lives and property", Umaru Abdullahi, Ore Unit Commander advised.
