In a letter to the Privy Council, the queen confirmed her approval of the wedding of Prince Harry, the fifth-in-line to the throne, and Markle, star of US TV drama "Suits".

"I declare My Consent to a Contract of Matrimony between My Most Dearly Beloved Grandson of Wales and , which Consent I am causing to be signified under the Great Seal and to be entered in the Books of the Privy Council," reads the letter which is dated March 14 2018.

Tradition

Harry and Meghan’s union, like all those of the first six royals in direct line of succession, has to be approved by the Queen.

This meets the legal requirement under the 2013 Succession to Crown Act of Britain, which replaced the former law that had been used since the 18th century.

Wedding plans

The Queen will be attending the couple's May 19 wedding at Windsor Castle. She has been quoted as saying that she is "excited" for the couple.
