How valuable should engagement rings be?

The lowest possible value an engagement ring should have.

How valuable your engagement ring should be to make your babe happy.

Having your wedding proposal rejected because of its value might sound strange but it is an unfortunate reality that people have experienced

So what exactly makes a proposal ring unacceptable or not valuable enough?

The long standing rule for engagement ring value is that it should cost two months’ salary, at the very least.

Let’s say a guy earns ₦300k in a month, this means he has to propose to bae with a ring of ₦600k or more.

No matter how much you earn, the idea is that you shouldn’t be reluctant to spend a quarter of it on an engagement ring for your wife-to-be.

Although some experts say three months rule apply, and in recent times, the one-month rule has also been brought out.

Here is the problem: for guys that don’t earn much, the value of their salaries could limit them while purchasing an engagement ring.

So, it is going to be a bit difficult for a guy that earns, say, ₦100k to afford a diamond ring because, following the 2-month rule, his budget will be just ₦200k.

In that case, getting a gold ring is not such a bad idea.

If you invest 300k in a gold ring and it gets rejected because of its low ‘value’, you probably should have a proper rethink about the woman you’re thinking of spending the rest of your life with.

The amount a guy should be earning before considering marriage is debatable, but regardless, if you spend your full three months’ salary on a wedding ring, it is valuable.

There are no two ways about it. Guys, don’t let an ungrateful woman make you feel bad about this.

It might not be as expensive as that of the other man or as lavish as the ones your favourite celebs proposed with, but it is surely valuable.

Having said that, it needs to be mentioned that any thing different from a golden engagement ring might not sit well with many ladies.

I've heard quite a number say they don’t want to be proposed to with a silver ring.

So, guys, if you are going to propose and you can’t afford a diamond ring after following the two-month rule, then the only other acceptable option for many ladies is a gold ring.

If you can’t afford that either, you should use the four or five-month-rule instead.

Away from rules and regulations though, what people want in relationships and weddings and marriages differ.

If what you can afford does not match any of the rules wedding experts have proposed, please just go on and buy what your partner will be cool with.

The effort you put into these things are more important than wedding ceremonies and keeping up appearances.

You can always buy her a better ring as the marriage progresses.

Whatever you do though, just be sure you are prepared for a wedding and the responsibilities that come with marriage.
