9 signs that someone should no longer be your friend

Once you see these things, it should be clear to you that you might be needing some new friends soon.

Friends make life better

It is not strange that at some point we made some friendships that looked just fine at the onset, but along the line, it started to turn sour.

Well, we all make mistakes; but not everyone knows when to cut their losses and minimise damage.

Here are 9 things that will teach you to know the type of friends to break away from and save yourself further emotional wahala.

They are unsupportive

Why do you even want to remain friends with someone who does not support you? Anyone worth being a friend should know better than judging you when you mess up, no matter what it is you did. What are friends for?

A genuine friend will support you and help you through it, not turn the other cheek or insult you and make you feel worse about yourself.

They're way too competitive

Your friends should be celebrating your success, not secretly trying to outdo you at every turn. Enough said.

They can’t keep secrets

If you share a secret with a friend and such friend tells anyone, that person does not deserve your friendship. It’s just as straightforward as that.

They should not tell their father, mother, or even boyfriends or girlfriends. A secret should be a secret all the time – especially when you have a bitter quarrel, or are no longer as cool with each other as you used to be.

They don't make an effort with your new partner

The fact that your new girlfriend/boyfriend will be taking more of your time, and you will not have as much time to hang out with your bestie as you used to, will not really sit well with them; and that’s pretty understandable.

However, if they actually value your friendship, they should at least try to be cool with that new partner of yours; instead of being hostile and unfriendly to them from the very time they set eyes on them.

They tease you about your insecurities

Everyone has insecurities; things that we feel touchy about. Because they are your friends, you must have told them about yours.

Sensible friends will never tease you about it. Friends should always be able to make fun of themselves but not about sensitive things. If you have one or some friends that do this [especially intentionally and repetitively], they really aren’t worth much anymore.

They don’t agree they're wrong

Always be suspicious of people that can't apologize for their mistakes.

When your friends start to exhibit remorseless behaviour, or try to make you feel bad for getting angry at the wrong things they do to you, you should start considering how to stop being friends with such people.

They make your other friends feel inadequate

If you've got friends in one group that regularly have something uncool to say about your friends in another group, even without making any effort to really know who they are, it may be time to cut yourself away from them.

They're rude about things you like

You cannot always have the same taste with even your own siblings, so it is not a big deal if you and your best friends have different tastes. It has been widely said that friendship is not about forcing sameness, but about accepting differences.

Thus, when your BFF constantly says rude or hurtful things about what they CLEARLY know you like, you can’t be sure such person has your best interest at heart; and why are they still your friend if they don’t?

They don't make you happy anymore

Whichever way you view it from, the fact remains that friends should be for fun times, having a laugh and for providing emotional support.

Once they are not giving you any of these things anymore, then it's perhaps time to get rid and make some new friends.

A joyful past doesn't certainly equal a great future, so don't be frightened to wave good-bye if the negatives start to overshadow the positives.
