3 tips for a first timer

Travelling can be an enjoyable recreational activity but it does have its ups and downs, especially if it is your first time travelling outside your city.

24 things every young Nigerian should do before 25

This is why, of course, there are tips and advices for travellers to help them tackle these issues easily. Here are three tips to help you enjoy your trip if you're a first time traveller:

1. Don't be afraid:

Fear is a very powerful emotion; it can deter you from doing a lot of things you actually want to do.  As expected, you may feel nervous about doing something you have never done before, but you need to let go of your fears.

The fear of perceived danger can keep you holed up in your hotel room throughout your trip if you let it. Don’t be scared; loosen up so you can fulfill the purpose of your trip.

2. Don't be in a rush:

You will be excited by the new sights and sounds and the thrill of adventure. You may be tempted to try to ‘live in the moment’ and see it all.

If you overdo it, you will rush through your trip without any lingering memory or real knowledge of the places you visited. All you’ll have to show for your journey is pictures and souvenirs.

Pace yourself, for example, instead of trying to rush through 30 cities in 30 days, you could try 15 cities in those 30 days. Don’t rush your trip, in spite of the fact that you might have limited vacation time.

3. Socialise:

Even though you’re in a strange place, you are not alone in the world. There are fellow tourists and locals of the place.

You might be naturally introverted and shy, but you can exchange a smile with someone, or say a simple hello. Exchange contact details; phone numbers, Facebook details, email addresses etc.

Some lifelong friendships are made on vacations; it wouldn't hurt to try. You’d suddenly remember that lovely Jamaican couple you met in Australia with a wistful smile, and blame yourself for not having their number.
