16-year-old girls has reportedly committed suicide over fear of backlash she would receive after sharing a photo adjudged to be racially offensive.

Phoebe Connop

The deceased, Phoebe Connop, 16, had been chatting with an Asian boy she referred to as her boyfriend although they had never met before.

Joking with her friends, Phoebe posted a photo of herself via Instagram, with her skin edited to look darker and a scarf around her head, illustrating the length she would have to go to be accepted by her 'boyfriends' parents.

Speaking of Phoebe's suicide, Detective Sergeant Katherine Tomkins said:

"She was scared of what the reaction might be from the Asian community in her area."

Phoebe's dad, Laurence, 53, who had come home in Halesowen, West Midlands, only to find her dead after hanging herself, said, "She was a lovely girl who would never want to cause offence to anyone."
