The saying that policemen will always be policemen anywhere they are played itself out in Zimbabwe when a police officer caught taking a bribe by a superior officer, promptly shoved the money into his mouth and swallowed it, reports iHarare.
Zimbabwean police officer swallows bribe money after being caught
A police officer in Zimbabwe who was caught taking bribe actually swallowed the money.
The 29-year-old officer identified as Bishop Mwembe, attached to the Mzilikazi police station, was arrested after he allegedly received the bribe of $3 to allow 3 football fans to enter a stadium.
But when he saw his superior coming towards him, he put the money in his mouth and swallowed it.
The incident unfolded at the Barbourfields Stadium, during a game between the Highlanders and the Dynamos, when Mwembe was manning one of the gates at the stadium and allowed three to go inside without paying the required gate fee.
Mwembe allegedly began swallowing the money when a colleague caught him red-handed receiving the bribe.
Mwembe has been arraigned in court on bribery charges.
Prosecutore Nkatazo Dlodlo said that Mwembe was deployed at Barbourfields Stadium to monitor gates 17, 18, 19, and 20.
Dlodlo said officer Velokuhle Ncube observed Mwembe receiving money from three people who were entering the stadium through gate 18.
“Ncube grabbed the accused by the belt and demanded that he hands over the money which he was holding in his left hand and he refused. Mwembe then put the money in his mouth and started chewing it.”
The court heard that a fight erupted at the Barbourfields Police Post when the colleague tried to grab the uneaten money while the officer drank from a bottle of water to get the money down his throat easier.
But the officer managed to grab a piece of the last dollar bill, which will be used as evidence in court against Mwembe.
