The Gwaram Local Government has revealed that no fewer than 80 persons have registered to take part in a mass wedding, sponsored by the Jigawa Government.

The information was disclosed by the Local Government’s Information Officer, Nasiru Yusif, on Friday, November 18, in Dutse, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

According to Yusif, the new suitors comprised of 40 men and 40 women.

Yusif also said that the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee for the wedding in the area, Abdullahi Basirka, announced the figure during a stakeholders meeting which took place in Gwaram on Thursday, November 17.

NAN reports that the committee would visit the District Head of the area to enlist his support in educating people on the importance of the programme.

Yusif added that the Council Chairman, Ilu Shuwarin, has pledged the council’s support towards hosting the mass wedding successfully.

Earlier, NAN reported that the Jigawa government set up a 19-member committee to organise mass weddings for widows and divorcees in the state on July 16.

The committee is reportedly headed by the Secretary to the State Government, Abdulkadir Fanini.

According to the state government, the exercise is aimed at checking social vices among the people.
