A baby factory where infants are sold for as low as N300,000 has been uncovered by operatives of the Special Task Force (STF) of the Operation Safe Haven of the Nigerian Army in Jos, Plateau State.

ViewPoint reports that the baby factory syndicate was discovered along the Bukuru Park road in Jos North Local Government Area of the state while the operators, including eight men and three women, were arrested.

Commander of the task force, Maj. Gen. Rogers Nicholas who spoke on the discovery, said the group which specialized in producing babies for onward sales to other states of the federation, had been operating for a long time before the long arm of the law caught up with them.

One of the suspects who narrated how the group works, said it has a network that is spread across the country and they usually entice unsuspecting young ladies with mouth-watering offers and in other cases, drug them with substances that lead to forced labour.

It was gathered that some of the teenage girls are impregnated by the men employed for that purpose and when they put to bed, the babies are then sold by the syndicate.

Maj. Gen. Nicholas disclosed that the discovery of the factory was made possible following a tip-off from one of the victims identified as Happiness John.

Narrating her experience to the Army, John who said she just had her second child for the syndicate, said she was taken to the baby factory by a friend who claimed she sold her set of twins for N400,000 in order to raise capital for her business.

“During my first pregnancy almost two years ago, my friend, Zubaida, came to me and told me that I should come and stay with her in a separate room so that when I gave birth, she would take me to Lafia in Nasarawa State to sell the baby and get capital to start a business.

She told me she had once sold her twins in Abuja but I rejected the idea. When I had the second pregnancy, Zubaida and her friend came and took me to a room around West of Mines in Jos and gave me hard drugs.”
