Unsatisfied customer shows up at restaurant with a bomb

A 42-year-old Polish man living in Ireland who was unhappy with the food he ordered from a local takeaway restaurant showed up with what looked like a bomb to demonstrate his dissatisfaction.

Fermoy District Court heard that a Polish man, Sebastian Ś, 42, of Rathowen, ordered a food delivery from Amigo's Takeaway on August 6, 2023. Sebastian Ś. received the order, was not satisfied with it and got into a dispute with the staff.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Majella O'Sullivan, told the court that the Pole went to the premises with two glass containers and placed them on the counter. The lids of the containers had holes cut out in them and were stuffed with a cloth soaked in gasoline. During an argument with a customer, the restaurant's employees threw glass containers outside.

The Pole was provided with a Polish translator in court and pleaded guilty to threatening and offensive behaviour.

Defense lawyer, Ciaran O'Keeffe, said his client suffered from heart problems and was taking medication at the time of the incident. He said his client previously worked in a food processing plant but was going through a difficult time. He added that his client did not appear to fully understand that what he did was wrong.

The court was informed that Sebastian Ś. he had five previous convictions, including one for assault and one for obstruction, and five months before the Amigo incident he received a suspended sentence for assault.

Judge Roberts said, "He was obviously trying to scare and intimidate people in the restaurant. Frankly, I have a hard time finding a reason why I shouldn't send him to prison."

The judge adjourned the case until June 28 for the probation officer's report to be completed. He asked Mr O'Keeffe to explain to his client that if he came to the attention of the police in the meantime, he would be sent to prison.
