Two women drown in abandoned galamsey pits

A 56–year–old farmer drowned in an old abandoned mining pit in an attempt to rescue her two-year-old grandson

Two women have drowned in an abandoned galamsey pits in separate incidents at Akyem Hia and Akyem Bomaa in the Eastern region.

A 56–year–old farmer, Ama Oparebea drowned in an old abandoned mining pit in an attempt to rescue her two-year-old grandson, who was trapped in the pit at Hia, a village near Akyem Pramkese in the Kwabibrem district.

Her body has since been deposited at the St. Dominic Hospital Morgue at Akwatia.

The Assembly member for the area, Evans Akpraku who reported the incident to the police said, the deceased went to the farm with her daughter-in-law and grandson to harvest some farm produce but while the two were busily working on the farm, they realized that the grandson was nowhere to be found.

A search was mounted only to discover that the grandson was trapped in the old mining pit near their farm.

The deceased reportedly jumped into the pit and with the support of her daughter-in-law managed to rescue the little boy but unfortunately, she slipped and fell into the pit when climbing out and drowned in the process.

Meanwhile, at Akyem Bomaa, a 60-year-old woman was found floating in a mining pit after she went missing for two days.
