Tail of crashed jet found in sea

Indonesia’s search and rescue agency has said that the discovery of the tail shows that the black boxes might be nearby.

The tail of the ill-fated Air Asia flight QZ8501 has been found in the Java Sea, searchers in Indonesia say.

“We've found the tail that has been our main target,” the head of the agency, Bambang Soelistyo told a news conference in Jakarta.

“I can confirm that what we found was the tail apart from the pictures”, Soelistyo said adding that the team is “still desperately trying to locate the black box”.

The agency chief also said that the tail, which is the first significant piece of wreckage to be identified, has the AirAsia mark on it.

Only 40 bodies of passengers have so far been recovered from the sea but no survivors are expected from the crash.

The plane, which was carrying 162 passengers, disappeared from radar on December 28, shortly after taking off from Surabaya, Indonesia for a journey to Singapore.
