Suspected Northern Ireland car bomb injures man

Police in Belfast said a suspected car bomb had detonated early on Friday in the city, injuring one man who had been taken to hospital.

"At this time we believe a device has exploded under a vehicle," said police spokesman Darrin Jones. Police said emergency services were attending the scene and the condition of the man was not yet known.

The Irish Independent newspaper said the man was a prison officer, citing security sources. Police were unable to confirm any of the injured party's details.

A 1998 peace deal largely ended three decades of violence in Northern Ireland between Protestants who want to remain British and Catholics favouring unification with Ireland, but pockets of division and sporadic violence remain.
