Google drive is the new Torrent for sharing illegal movies, series

Pirates are getting smarter and more creative with the way they distribute illegally obtained TV shows, movies and more.

Since Torrent sites started getting the heat from take down requests issued to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), a United States law that helps protect illegal use of intellectual copyrighted works, pirates have had to get more creative.

Google Drive seems to be the most popular hub used by the pirates, with nearly five thousand DMCA takedown requests filed by Hollywood studios and other copyrighted owners – a few hundred Google drive links were requested to be pulled down by the owners.

What these pirates cleverly do is unlist the videos on Youtube so they don’t turn up in search results. These Youtube videos are then shared as Google Drive links through discussion forums and other channels so it's difficult for the content owners to find the videos and get them taken down.

Explanation as to why Google drive is widely used could be traced to its ease of use to create a google account, and navigate around its user interface. Google also offers 15GB of storage space on Google drive more than Microsoft’s One Drive and Dropbox combined which offer 5GB and 2GB respectively.
