Uchendu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) replaces George Sekibo who was sacked by the Appeal Court.
The decision of the Court was sequel to the judgement by the election tribunal which sacked Sekibo from office.
Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu administered the oath of office to Senator Uchendu.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had presented a certificate of return to Uchenduas the rightful winner of Rivers East senatorial district, on Tuesday, August 30, 2017.
