Lawmakers want governors to have more power over police than president

The bill was sponsored by Solomon Olamilekan; the representative of the Lagos East Senatorial District.

The Nigerian Senate

The lawmakers are voting to decentralize the police force to ensure that governors have the power of the “last command” over commissioners of police instead of the president.

The Senate is seeking to abolish the provision, in Section 215 (4) of the 1999 Constitution, which empowers the president to overrule any orders given to a Police Commissioner by the state governor.
