State Govt, UBEC spends N2.3bn on education in 2 years

Shehu said that the state government had contributed N1.5 billion out of the amount, while the commission provided over N800 million.

The Executive Secretary, Sokoto State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Alhaji Faruku Shehu, disclosed this in Sokoto on Wednesday at a news briefing to mark the two years in office of Gov. Aminu Tambuwal.

He said that some of the projects were jointly executed between the board and the commission, while others were solely undertaken by the state government.

Shehu enumerated some of the projects to include the construction of additional 75 classrooms and offices across the state, at the cost of about N 271million.

In the same vein, N1.2 billion was spent on the renovation of 712 classrooms, hostels and toilets across the state.

”The projects included drilling of boreholes, construction of fences, expansion of schools and provision of instructional materials."

”Over N90 million was also expended by the state government under its whole-school approach, which entailed the construction and renovation of some schools,” Shehu added.

The executive secretary explained that teachers were also trained and retrained to update their knowledge and skills among others.

Shehu commended Gov. Tambuwal for according top priority to the education, as well as the declaration of the state of emergency in the education sector.

He acknowledged the sustained support of the UBEC, UNICEF, USAID and other Foundations like Oando Foundation to the board.
