Community leader calls for screening of building sites

A collapsed building under construction

Adesina made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the collapsed building site at 2/4, Richard Abimbola Str., Ilasamaja, Isolo, Lagos.

“I think before such buildings reach a certain level, government agencies should visit and test the quality of building materials being used there."

“It is unfortunate that this incident should serve as a lesson to both the state government and other agencies concerned."

“I call on the government to live up to its expectation and promises, when it comes to building construction."

“They should enlarge and widen their scope, to do ground and materials testing for buildings everywhere, not only in the highbrow areas."

“Buildings at the suburbs, too, should be effectively monitored, inspected and tested, to save lives and property.

“Before a building is constructed, let the government agencies and departments involved inspect and test all the materials,’’ the community leader advised.

Earlier, Mr Jude Idimogu, Lagos State House of Assembly member, representing the Isolo Constituency, said at the site that detailed investigations would be conducted, to determine the major cause of the collapse.

“Nigerians are stubborn, and we do not like to obey the law."

“ I believe that if the site had been properly sealed off earlier, we then need to continue to monitor such sites, because we need to investigate, to know the true position, before I can adequately comment on that aspect."

“The Lagos State Government is always on the move."

“It is always in the forefront, doing the right things to protect the lives and property of its citizens in the state."

“This is just one of the few ugly occurrences,’’ the parliamentarian added.
