President hasn’t cleared Babachir Lawal of corruption charges – Report

The president, in a letter to the Senate, said that Lawal had not been called upon to defend himself against the allegations made against him.

President Buhari and Babachir Lawal

Buhari has been criticized for clearing Lawal of wrongdoing after the Senate urged the SGF to resign for mishandling funds meant for the care of Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) in the North-East.

The president, in a letter to the Senate, said that Lawal had not been called upon to defend himself against the allegations.

“What this means is that the president wants to be able to handle the matter on his own terms, based purely on proper adherence to extant public service rules and procedures relating to abuse of office by public officers,” the presidency source told Daily Trust.

“If he is going to discipline his own appointee, he would rather do it properly, not railroaded. No one should be in doubt of the resolve of Mr. President to sustain his long-held reputation for integrity and his zero-level tolerance for corruption. But things must be done properly, and seen to be so. And that is what the president is keen on ensuring,” the source added.

Meanwhile, Kaduna State Senator, Shehu Sani has said that Buhari’s letter on Lawal is full of lies.

He also accused the president of fighting corruption in his government with deodorant while using insecticide in other sectors.
