In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Uyo, the Sector Commander, Mrs Cecelia Alao revealed the differences in the number of deaths, injuries and crashes recorded for 2014 and 2015.

There was an increase in road crashes.

Last year, 118 road crashes were recorded, 2014 had 153 cases.

The sector commander attributed the high rate of crashes to dangerous overtaking, and about 53% of these accidents to over speeding.

Alao promised to work harder this year to reduce the high rate of crashes.

Thankfully, there was a reduction in both injuries and deaths.

Alao noted that 19 males, 17 females and a child died last year, while 39 lives were lost in 2014.

In 2014, 141 persons were injured, while last year had 81 injured people.

“We brainstormed and strategized on our corporate goals in line with the emerging traffic challenges to curb certain issues coming up within the year.

“We had very robust and tasking goals in 2015 among which was to ensure reduction in road traffic crashes which we achieved very reasonably in Akwa Ibom State."

While Akwa Ibom had an increase in road crashes, her sister state, Cross River, had a 70% reduction in road accidents during the Christmas period.
